Jakarta Shares Air Quality Data Management Experience with Bodetabek Governments

The Head of the Environmental Office of Jakarta, Asep Kuswanto, led a cross-regional training session focused on improving air quality data management for local governments in Bogor, Depok, Tangerang, and Bekasi. The program, organized under the BERSAMA platform (Sharing Information and Synergy for Jabodetabek Air Management), was held in collaboration with Clean Air Asia (CAA) and aimed to strengthen technical and governance capacities across regions. Asep highlighted Jakarta’s readiness to act as a learning hub, citing the city’s 111 active Air Quality Monitoring Stations (SPKUs) as a model for effective and transparent management.

Participants from environmental and planning agencies in surrounding regions exchanged knowledge on monitoring systems, data standardization, and regional targets. Field visits were also conducted to both reference and Low-Cost Sensor stations, where attendees learned about calibration, data collection, and integration into Jakarta’s real-time air monitoring portal, udara.jakarta.go.id. Asep emphasized that well-managed data enables evidence-based policymaking and more precise pollution control efforts.

The Director of Clean Air Asia Indonesia, Ririn Radiawati Kusuma, stressed the need for reliable data governance to ensure consistent and trustworthy monitoring results. She encouraged local governments to explore funding alternatives, such as requiring industries to operate their own monitoring stations or promoting inter-regional collaborations. Ririn also noted Jakarta’s potential to serve as a pioneer by offering technical support, sharing data, and providing monitoring equipment to neighboring areas.

Both parties agreed that the initiative represents a vital step toward building a connected air quality management network across Jabodetabek. Through shared best practices, regional governments can strengthen cooperation and develop an integrated monitoring system. Ultimately, the effort reinforces the collective responsibility of ensuring clean air for all, beyond administrative boundaries.
