Residents of Thousand Islands Appreciate Free Diving Training Program

Residents of the Thousand Islands have expressed enthusiasm and gratitude for a free open water diving certification training organized by the local government in collaboration with the Village Deliberation Institution (LMK) of Pulau Panggang and PT Pertamina Hulu Energi Offshore North West Java (PHE ONWJ). Alfa, a 20-year-old resident of Pulau Panggang, shared that participating in the training was a dream come true, as it allowed him to explore Indonesia’s underwater beauty without the high personal costs associated with diving courses. The training took place in the waters around Pulau Pramuka and provided participants with both classroom instruction and hands-on experience in open water. Alfa highlighted that he learned essential skills such as diving physics, scuba equipment handling, underwater navigation, and the use of hand signals.

Alfa described the open water diving experience as thrilling and invaluable, expressing sincere thanks to all parties involved in providing the free training. The program not only offered practical diving skills but also enhanced his understanding of underwater safety and the techniques required to navigate and interact responsibly in marine environments. He emphasized that such training, especially when offered at no cost, greatly benefits young residents who may otherwise be unable to afford diving lessons. The program is seen as a stepping stone toward both personal development and potential career opportunities related to maritime and tourism sectors.

Yulihardi, the Deputy Subdistrict Head of North Thousand Islands, praised the initiative, noting that increasing the number of trained dive guides could significantly boost the local underwater tourism sector and positively impact the community’s economy. He emphasized that training youth in essential diving skills is crucial for developing tourism potential and fostering sustainable economic growth in the region. Ahmad Haerudin, Chair of the Panggang Marine Tourism Community Organization, added that this annual program aims to equip residents with foundational diving skills while fostering a love and respect for the marine ecosystem. He explained that the training prepares participants not only for recreational diving but also for professional opportunities in marine tourism.

The three-day course, held from October 28 to 30, 2025, included ten young participants from six villages in the Thousand Islands. The curriculum covered both theoretical lessons in the classroom and practical exercises in open water, teaching scuba equipment usage, buoyancy control, mask and regulator clearing, safety stops, underwater navigation, and emergency response procedures. Given the high risks associated with diving, instructors emphasized strict adherence to safety protocols and proper techniques. Upon completion, participants’ performance will be submitted to the Professional Association of Diving Instructors (PADI) for certification, ensuring that trainees meet internationally recognized standards for open water diving.
