Two shop houses commonly used as a spare parts workshop and a convenience store on Jalan Raya Cipayung Raya, RT 08/02, Cipayung, East Jakarta, were completely destroyed by fire on Friday, November 28, around 6:48 p.m. The blaze is suspected to have started from an electrical spark above the workshop that fell onto a stack of paint cans, quickly igniting the interior. The workshop was unoccupied at the time, and residents’ attempts to extinguish the fire were unsuccessful.
Matrojih, the duty officer of the East Jakarta Fire and Rescue Sub-agency, stated that eyewitnesses reported the fire escalated rapidly, engulfing all items inside the workshop, including spare parts and paint. Attempts to control the flames with portable fire extinguishers also failed. Preliminary investigations suggest an electrical short circuit as the cause, with large smoke and explosions observed inside the building.
To suppress the fire, seven fire trucks and 35 personnel were deployed. Firefighting began at 6:52 p.m., cooling operations were completed by 7:05 p.m., and the fire was declared extinguished at 7:14 p.m. No casualties were reported, but material losses are estimated at approximately IDR 1 billion.
The owner of the convenience store, Rendi, who was outside at the time, witnessed the fire spreading to both the workshop and his store. The workshop’s rolling door was difficult to open, so he focused on removing valuables from his own store to minimize losses. He recalled that the fire spread quickly, and he managed to evacuate his belongings safely.
