SPALD Expansion on Pramuka Island Scheduled to Finish by Late December

The upgrade of the Domestic Wastewater Management System (SPALD) on Pulau Pramuka, Kelurahan Pulau Panggang, North Kepulauan Seribu Subdistrict, has reached 60 percent completion, with work having started in August 2025 and targeted for completion by the end of December. Head of the Water Resources Sub-Department of Kepulauan Seribu, Mustajab, explained that the capacity increase is intended to address the overload of the existing system, which could no longer accommodate the rising number of household connections. Initially, the system had a capacity of 195 cubic meters, but this year it is being expanded to 400 cubic meters. Mustajab projected that the expanded SPALD could meet local needs for the next 20 years as new household connections are added.

Mustajab emphasized that the SPALD expansion is not only a technical upgrade but also a key step toward optimizing wastewater management in the area. He added that the project aims to support the sustainable development of Pulau Pramuka as a tourist destination while improving environmental conditions. Existing household connections currently total 56, and the expansion will accommodate future growth. Mustajab noted that the involvement of the local community in construction also opens job opportunities and ensures workplace safety through BPJS employment registration.

Bupati Kepulauan Seribu, Muhammad Fadjar Churniawan, expressed gratitude for the ongoing infrastructure development and praised the project’s positive impact on both environmental quality and tourism. He highlighted that the increased SPALD capacity addresses residents’ needs while safeguarding the ecological sustainability of the island. Churniawan emphasized the strategic importance of proper wastewater management for preserving the island’s status as a prime tourist destination. He noted that a well-maintained environment would attract more visitors, ultimately enhancing the welfare of the local population.

The SPALD upgrade represents a collaboration between the government, local community, and third-party contractors to deliver both social and environmental benefits. Mustajab underscored the dual purpose of the project: ensuring public health through better wastewater management and promoting economic opportunities for local residents. Churniawan reinforced that infrastructure improvements like the SPALD are essential for supporting sustainable tourism in Kepulauan Seribu. The initiative signals Jakarta’s broader commitment to enhancing island infrastructure while preserving the region’s natural and social resources for long-term development.
