The revitalisation of Jalan Kesatrian X in Kebon Manggis, East Jakarta has transformed a previously neglected riverside plot into a neat and inviting green park. Local officials explained that the area had long been an unused patch of land along the Old Ciliwung River and risked becoming an eyesore if left unmanaged. The project began in October with seven PPSU personnel overseeing the landscaping efforts. Their work has reshaped the site into a cleaner and more welcoming public space.
According to the Head of Kebon Manggis Urban Village, Fera Riana Sari, the initiative aimed to introduce a fresher atmosphere to a location that had been idle for years. The Economic and Development Section Chief, Mas’udah, said that the design adopted a theme centred on relief art and vertical gardens. The site now features wooden ornaments and a wide selection of plants ranging from decorative species to homegrown medicinal herbs and vegetables. Officials noted that the 30-square-metre plot includes tomatoes, eggplants, mother-in-law’s tongue and red miyana as part of its new greenery.
Beyond the garden elements, the area has also been enhanced with colourful murals depicting animals such as camels, dogs, giraffes and elephants. Additional aesthetic improvements include brightly painted bridges and stairways designed to create a more cheerful environment. Local community representatives said these features have turned the site into a lively corner of the neighbourhood. Residents have begun using it as a pleasant space to gather and move through daily.
An LMK member from RW 03, Rudi Hartono, expressed appreciation for the local government’s efforts to elevate the neighbourhood’s appearance. He said the improvements have made the surroundings cleaner and more functional for residents. Community members hope similar initiatives will continue across the area. Some even believe the newly improved landscape could support water-based tourism activities in the future.
