A suspected electrical short circuit sparked a fire at a second-hand goods stall on Jalan Tenis III, RT 05/14, Kapuk, Cengkareng, West Jakarta. The Head of the West Jakarta Fire and Rescue Sub-Department (Gulkarmat), Suheri, reported receiving the emergency call from local residents at 05:13 WIB. In response, 24 fire trucks and 70 personnel were immediately dispatched to the scene. The fire primarily involved piles of highly flammable second-hand items, complicating suppression efforts.
Firefighters managed to contain the blaze by 06:07 WIB, preventing its spread to surrounding structures. Suheri emphasized that despite the dense accumulation of goods, crews prioritized safeguarding nearby buildings. The operation covered an area of 380 square meters and was officially declared complete at 07:26 WIB. No casualties were reported, underscoring the effectiveness of rapid emergency response.
The fire was attributed to a short circuit igniting combustible materials, Suheri confirmed. Residents corroborated this, with Melani recounting that flames erupted from the piles and prompted her to alert neighbors. She also attempted to douse the fire with water before firefighters arrived. Quick intervention by Gulkarmat personnel prevented further property damage and ensured public safety.
Authorities stressed the importance of vigilance in managing flammable materials in densely packed stalls. The incident highlights both the risks of electrical faults and the role of coordinated emergency response in urban areas. It also serves as a reminder for residents and vendors to maintain fire safety protocols. Overall, the event concluded without injuries, demonstrating effective containment under challenging conditions.
