Mayor Arifin, accompanied by Central Jakarta PKK Chair Witri Yenny, harvested 63 kilograms of pakcoy on Monday (23/2) from the rooftop urban farming site on the second floor of Block A at the Central Jakarta Mayor’s Office building. The rooftop has been transformed into an urban farming area cultivating hydroponic vegetables and housing catfish seed ponds. The initiative reflects efforts to maximize limited urban space for productive use.
Arifin explained that the harvest came from seven out of ten hydroponic racks, totaling 670 planting holes. Each rack contains 90 holes planted with pakcoy and can produce up to nine kilograms per cycle. The remaining racks are used to grow various other hydroponic vegetables.
The harvested pakcoy is sold at affordable prices to employees within the Central Jakarta Mayor’s Office complex. Proceeds from the sales are used to purchase new seedlings, ensuring the sustainability and continuous productivity of the urban farming program. This self-sustaining model allows the project to operate efficiently without relying solely on budget allocations.
Arifin added that the administration continues to promote urban farming initiatives across residential neighborhoods as well as government and private office environments in Central Jakarta. The program is part of a broader strategy to strengthen independent food security at the local level. Through consistent expansion, the city aims to encourage community participation in sustainable urban agriculture.
