Chair of Commission B of the DPRD DKI Jakarta, Nova Harivan Paloh, has proposed conducting outreach and educational campaigns for farmers and suppliers selling vegetables and fruits in Jakarta’s markets. He said the initiative is intended to prevent the practice of bringing in or disposing of waste improperly within market areas. According to him, such socialization efforts can be delivered in the form of appeals as part of a collective effort to keep the city clean.
The proposal emerged during a working meeting between Commission B, Perumda Pasar Jaya, and the Jakarta Environmental Agency. The meeting revealed that some traders and members of the public have been bringing and dumping waste in market areas, exacerbating existing waste management problems. Nova stressed that maintaining cleanliness should be a shared responsibility.
He highlighted that waste volume at Pasar Induk Kramat Jati has reached approximately 200 tons per day, making it a pressing concern. Responsibility for cleanliness, he said, does not rest solely with market management but also with traders, consumers, and business owners such as restaurant operators. He cited common purchasing habits, such as buyers taking bananas while leaving behind stems and other waste, as contributing factors to the growing trash volume.
Nova noted that Pasar Jaya has issued warnings against littering and strengthened monitoring through CCTV. However, he emphasized that collective awareness remains the key solution. Ensuring cleanliness, hygiene, and comfort, he added, is essential so consumers can shop comfortably and traders can operate in a healthy environment.
