DPRD Deputy Chair Supports Faster Market Waste Handling

Vice Chair of the DPRD DKI Jakarta, Basri Baco, voiced support for accelerating waste management in markets operated by Perumda Pasar Jaya. He noted that waste has become a national concern, as reflected in the National Coordination Meeting on Waste Management organized by the central government. According to him, this signals the need for serious and integrated handling from the national to the regional level, including in Jakarta.

Baco welcomed Pasar Jaya’s plan to manage waste independently so that not all of it is transported to TPST Bantargebang. He described the move as part of broader efforts to reduce the burden on the city’s final disposal site. He also suggested prioritizing modern waste management systems in revitalized markets so that physical upgrades go hand in hand with improved cleanliness and waste processing systems.

Beyond end-stage processing, Baco emphasized the importance of reducing waste at its source. He urged the Jakarta provincial government to formulate policies that limit excess waste entering markets, citing examples such as vegetables arriving with unnecessary roots and trimmings. If produce were cleaned or pre-packaged before distribution, he argued, the volume of waste in markets could be significantly reduced.

He further encouraged Pasar Jaya to collaborate with professionals and adopt appropriate technology in waste management, gradually expanding implementation across more markets. Baco expressed hope that such measures would lower transportation costs to Bantargebang and provide a sustainable, long-term solution. In addition, he stressed the urgency of market revitalization, echoing earlier remarks by Jakarta Governor Pramono Anung, while acknowledging funding challenges and exploring options such as regional capital injections to support priority projects.
