Kelapa Lilin Link Canal Embankment Repairs 80% Complete

The ongoing repair of the retaining wall along the Kelapa Lilin connecting channel reflects the urgency of strengthening urban drainage infrastructure in flood-prone areas. Located in North Jakarta, the project has reached approximately 80 percent completion and is targeted for early April 2026. The damage was primarily caused by landslides triggered by heavy rainfall, compounded by the aging condition of the structure. This situation highlights the need for continuous maintenance of critical water management systems in densely populated areas.

Head of North Jakarta Water Resources Sub-agency, Heria Suwandi, stated that the repair aims to restore drainage functionality and reduce the risk of water overflow during intense rain. Heria explained that the reconstruction covers a length of over 40 meters with a height of four meters. The project, which began in late February, involves a dedicated team supported by heavy machinery to accelerate progress. These measures reflect a proactive approach to mitigating urban flooding risks.

As the project nears completion, Heria Suwandi noted that work has entered the finishing stage, including surface plastering to ensure structural durability and neatness. Heria emphasized that the repair process was carried out in stages, starting from dismantling the damaged structure to restoring the surrounding area. The phased approach ensures both safety and long-term functionality of the drainage system. Such infrastructure improvements are essential in maintaining resilience against extreme weather conditions.

From the community perspective, Head of Pegangsaan Dua Urban Village, Sarmudi, expressed appreciation for the swift response of the authorities. Sarmudi highlighted that the repair is crucial in preventing recurring waterlogging in the area. He also encouraged residents to take part in maintaining the improved facility to ensure its sustainability. Ultimately, the project represents a collaborative effort between government and community in creating a safer and more organized urban environment.
