“Alumni United” Conference in Jakarta Marks 250 Years of U.S. Independence

In celebration of Freedom 250, the U.S. Embassy Jakarta convened around 400 Indonesian alumni of U.S. universities and exchange programs for the inaugural “Alumni United States of America” conference in Jakarta on April 11. The event marked the launch of “Alumni United,” a flagship initiative aimed at connecting and empowering Indonesia’s U.S. alumni network. It served as a platform for learning, collaboration, and networking while showcasing alumni achievements and U.S. culture and innovation. The gathering also highlighted the strength of the U.S.-Indonesia Comprehensive Strategic Partnership.

Notable participants included figures such as Joko Anwar, Tantowi Yahya, Donna Priadi, Batara Sianturi, Edward Tirtanata, Andre Djokosoetono, and Angie Wiranata. They contributed as speakers and moderators, sharing how U.S. education and exchange experiences shaped their careers and contributions to Indonesia. Their stories reflected the impact of international education on innovation, entrepreneurship, and social development. The sessions underscored the value of cross-cultural learning in shaping leadership.

In his opening remarks, Chargé d’Affaires Peter M. Haymond emphasized the importance of alumni as a bridge between the two nations. He noted that Indonesian alumni exemplify the potential created when local talent meets American educational opportunities. According to him, these individuals contribute to innovation, business development, defense cooperation, and community advancement. His remarks reinforced the broader vision of strengthening bilateral ties through people-to-people connections.

The conference featured interactive activities including exhibitions by American and alumni-led companies, a professional headshot booth, a technology showcase, and networking sessions. These experiences were designed to encourage collaboration, skill-building, and professional growth among participants. Through Alumni United, the U.S. Embassy aims to foster long-term connections and mentorship across sectors. Ultimately, the initiative seeks to translate alumni experiences into meaningful contributions to the evolving U.S.-Indonesia partnership.
