Gading Nirwana Retention Basin Project Set for Completion This May

The Blue Troops of the Water Resources Implementation Unit in Kelapa Gading District, North Jakarta, have begun constructing a retention basin on Gading Nirwana Street in Pegangsaan Dua. The project is targeted for completion by May and is intended to address recurring flooding issues. Head of the unit, Supiyan, stated that the initiative responds directly to residents’ requests for improved water management. The effort reflects a proactive approach to mitigating urban flooding risks.

Supiyan explained that the construction also aims to anticipate water pooling and flooding during periods of heavy rainfall. The retention basin is designed with specific dimensions to optimize its capacity and function. Work on the project began in early April 2026 and is progressing according to schedule. The development highlights the importance of infrastructure solutions in addressing local environmental challenges.

He further noted that two retention basins will be built, positioned at the front and rear of the residential area. The project involves nine personnel and is supported by a portable pump to assist water flow during construction. Initial excavation is carried out by heavy equipment, followed by manual work to ensure precision. The basin is expected to hold up to 150 cubic meters of water, enhancing drainage capacity in the area.

A local security officer, Urip, described the area as prone to flooding due to its low-lying geography and surrounding elevated roads. He noted that water levels can reach 20 to 30 centimeters during heavy rain, disrupting daily activities. Residents hope the new infrastructure will significantly reduce flooding and improve living conditions. The project is expected to provide a long-term solution to a persistent community concern.
