Fire Aboard Cargo Ship KM Sukses Hasil Cemerlang II Successfully Extinguished

Personnel from the North Jakarta and Thousand Islands Fire and Rescue Agency successfully extinguished a fire that engulfed the motor vessel KM Sukses Hasil Cemerlang II at Gang Kepiting, Jalan Tuna VI, RT 20/17, Penjaringan Subdistrict, North Jakarta. The incident occurred in the early hours of Wednesday (27/5/2026), prompting an immediate emergency response after local residents reported the blaze to authorities around 1:34 a.m. Firefighters quickly deployed five fire engines along with 25 personnel to the scene in an effort to prevent the flames from spreading to nearby vessels docked at the harbor.

Head of Operations Section for the North Jakarta and Thousand Islands Fire and Rescue Agency, Gatot Sulaeman, explained that firefighting operations began at approximately 1:41 a.m. and continued for several hours before the situation was fully brought under control. Following an extensive cooling process to prevent reignition, the operation was officially completed at 7:51 a.m. Preliminary findings indicated that the fire was likely triggered by an electrical short circuit in the vessel’s engine compartment. Fortunately, no fatalities or injuries were reported in the incident.

Firefighters faced significant challenges during the operation because the burning vessel was positioned in the middle of the water and surrounded by several other ships docked nearby. To accelerate containment efforts and reduce the risk of the fire spreading, emergency teams received assistance from KM Antasena, which helped tow the burning vessel into a more open area. Additional support was also provided by the tugboat TB Ayu to aid firefighting efforts and improve access for emergency personnel operating at sea.

Authorities emphasized the importance of preventive safety measures for ship owners and crew members following the incident. Officials urged all vessel operators to routinely inspect electrical installations and ensure wiring systems comply with safety standards. They also encouraged every ship to be equipped with portable fire extinguishers as an early response measure in case of onboard fires. Local resident Ahmad Yani praised the rapid response of firefighters, noting that their swift action successfully prevented the flames from spreading to other vessels docked around the harbor area.
