The Blue Team of the Thousand Islands Water Resources Sub-agency has begun installing gabion wire barriers along Gusung Klanceng Beach on Lancang Island, located in Pari Island Urban Village, South Thousand Islands District. The coastal protection effort is aimed at strengthening the outer side of the seawall against erosion caused by rough weather and high sea waves. Head of the Thousand Islands Water Resources Sub-agency, Mustajab, said the installation is part of a preventive measure to reduce the risk of coastal damage in the area. The project reflects the local government’s continued focus on protecting vulnerable shoreline infrastructure across the Thousand Islands region.
According to Mustajab, the gabions are constructed using crushed stone packed into wire mesh baskets designed to absorb wave impact and reinforce the seawall structure. Each gabion unit measures approximately 1.5 meters in length and 50 centimeters in height. The installation is planned to stretch across 50 meters of coastline, with work progress currently reaching 13 meters, equivalent to nine gabion units already in place. Officials stated that the project began on May 11 and is expected to be completed by the end of May, with seven Blue Team personnel deployed daily at the site.
The Water Resources Sub-agency hopes the gabion installation will minimize the impact of strong waves while improving the long-term durability of the coastal structure on Lancang Island. Authorities believe the reinforcement is particularly important as coastal communities continue facing challenges from tidal flooding and increasingly unpredictable weather conditions. The protective barrier is also expected to help preserve residential and public areas located near the shoreline from further erosion. By strengthening the seawall, the government aims to improve safety and resilience for residents living in coastal zones of the Thousand Islands.
Local residents have welcomed the project positively, viewing it as an important step toward improving coastal protection in the area. A resident of RW 03 in Pari Island Urban Village, Harmoko, expressed appreciation for the quick action taken by the Water Resources Sub-agency. He said residents now feel safer and more secure, especially during periods of high tides and extreme weather. Harmoko also expressed hope that similar coastal protection measures could eventually cover the entire shoreline of Lancang Island to ensure broader environmental and community safety.
