Preschool Students in Kelapa Gading Learn Vegetable Planting and Harvesting

Early childhood students from Bale Bermain Gading Kuncup Harmoni State PAUD SPS in North Jakarta took part in a hands-on vegetable planting and harvesting activity at the Pegangsaan Dua Menanam (Gangnam) Garden in Kelapa Gading as part of an outdoor learning program promoting healthy living and environmental awareness. A total of 24 students joined the activity, where they learned basic farming processes ranging from seed sowing and planting to watering and caring for crops.

Head of Kelapa Gading District, Rahmat Syahputra, praised the initiative, describing farming activities as a positive educational tool for children at an early age. According to him, the program helps broaden children’s knowledge and experiences outside the classroom while introducing them to the importance of food security and environmental care. He also expressed hope that the activity would encourage children to enjoy eating vegetables and grow into healthier future generations.

Pegangsaan Dua Urban Village Head, Sarmudi, explained that the harvest from the approximately 1.2 by 6-meter garden plot reached 24.5 kilograms of vegetables, consisting of 20 kilograms of water spinach and 4.5 kilograms of bok choy. Most of the harvested vegetables were taken home by the children, while the remaining produce was purchased by local residents and community cadres. He added that the Gangnam Garden also features fruit plants, family medicinal plants, and small livestock areas containing chickens and birds, making it an ideal educational space for children.

Meanwhile, teacher Ria from Bale Bermain Gading Kuncup Harmoni State PAUD SPS expressed appreciation to the Kelapa Gading District and Pegangsaan Dua Urban Village administrations for supporting the activity. She said the planting and harvesting session served as an effective outdoor learning experience that introduced children to the natural process of food production. According to her, the students were highly enthusiastic throughout the activity, and she hopes similar programs can continue as a way to promote education and healthy habits from an early age.
