Rasuna Said Area Emerges as New Icon of Jakarta’s Global City Transformation

The launch of Jakarta’s 499th anniversary celebrations, marking the city’s approach toward its fifth century, is set to take place along the HR Rasuna Said corridor in South Jakarta on May 9 and 10, 2026. Governor, Pramono Anung, stated that the location was chosen because Rasuna Said has emerged as a new symbol of Jakarta’s transformation into a global city. He also revealed plans to develop the corridor into a Car Free Day zone similar to the Sudirman-Thamrin area. The initiative reflects the administration’s broader ambition to create healthier and more accessible public spaces for residents.

According to Pramono, the Rasuna Said corridor represents one of Jakarta’s busiest and most strategic urban arteries. The area serves not only as a diplomatic and business hub but also as a center for sports, lifestyle activities, and cultural engagement. Because of its multifunctional character, the provincial government considers the corridor a fitting centerpiece for the anniversary celebrations. The decision underscores how urban development is increasingly being tied to public identity and civic experience in Jakarta.

Assistant for Economy and Finance of the Jakarta Regional Secretariat, Suharini Eliawati, explained that the presence of numerous embassies and economic centers has turned Rasuna Said into a symbol of Jakarta’s evolving identity. She highlighted the collaboration between government institutions, diplomatic missions, and private sector stakeholders as evidence of the city’s commitment to becoming resilient, inclusive, and sustainable. More than 30 embassy buildings, 15 ministry offices, and hundreds of private offices, hospitals, shopping centers, and residential towers are expected to support the festivities. This large-scale cooperation is intended to showcase a modern image of Jakarta while strengthening civic participation.

The anniversary launch has been designed to combine elements of Betawi culture with the realities of modern urban life. Planned activities include mass exercise programs, traditional Betawi lenong performances, and a major event titled Spekta Jakarta featuring dialogue sessions with city leaders and performances by national musicians. Suharini encouraged Jakarta residents to take part in the celebrations, emphasizing that the administration of Governor, Pramono Anung, and Vice Governor, Rano Karno, is preparing the capital for its future as a five-century-old metropolis. Through this event, the city government aims to present Jakarta as both culturally rooted and globally oriented.
