Wave Barrier Restoration on Kelapa Dua Island Finished

The Blue Troops of the Thousand Islands Water Resources Sub-agency have completed repairs on a collapsed breakwater located on the northern side of Neighborhood Unit 01/01 in Kelapa Dua Island, North Thousand Islands District. The damage was caused by strong tidal waves and rising seawater that struck the coastal structure several months ago. Head of the Thousand Islands Water Resources Sub-agency, Mustajab, stated that the repair work was carried out to protect coastal areas from abrasion while also improving safety for nearby residents. The project reflects ongoing efforts by local authorities to strengthen coastal resilience in vulnerable island communities.

According to Mustajab, the damaged section stretched approximately 100 meters and repairs were handled by five members of the Blue Troops unit. The restoration work began on May 7, 2026, and has now been fully completed. He explained that the structure had previously shifted after large concrete wave breakers were displaced by strong sea currents and tidal conditions. The repair operation was prioritized to prevent further deterioration that could threaten residential areas near the coastline.

The reinforcement process involved securing hollow concrete cubes along the breakwater structure to strengthen the overall construction. This method was designed to prevent the concrete blocks from shifting or being swept away by powerful ocean waves in the future. Mustajab stated that the reinforcement is expected to improve the effectiveness of the breakwater in protecting the shoreline from wave impact and coastal erosion. Local authorities hope the strengthened structure will provide longer-term protection for residents living near the coast of Kelapa Dua Island.

Residents also welcomed the swift response from the Blue Troops team. A local resident, Sindy, expressed appreciation for the quick repairs, saying the work helped prevent the damage from worsening and disrupting community activities. She also hoped that regular monitoring and maintenance of the coastal protection structure would continue in the future. The repair project highlights the importance of maintaining coastal infrastructure in island regions that are increasingly vulnerable to tidal flooding and sea erosion.
