Flooding Mitigation in Klender: Lawmakers Call for Cross-Agency Synergy to Resolve Drainage Issues

Member of Commission D of the Jakarta City Council, Abdurrahman Suhaimi, initiated a coordination meeting between community representatives and local government officials at the Duren Sawit District Office to address recurring flooding in Klender Urban Village. The meeting followed concerns raised by residents during Suhaimi’s recent recess activities, with discussions focusing on identifying the causes of flooding and developing practical mitigation measures. District and urban village officials, along with neighborhood leaders, attended the session to share information and discuss possible solutions. Residents also presented the challenges they face during flood events and proposed several actions they believe could be implemented immediately.

Suhaimi emphasized that the City Council’s responsibility extends beyond collecting public feedback and includes ensuring that community concerns are translated into concrete action through coordination with relevant government agencies. He said the meeting was organized to allow all stakeholders to compare information, identify the root causes of flooding, and formulate solutions that could be implemented as soon as possible. According to Suhaimi, every aspiration gathered during the recess period should be followed by measurable action rather than remaining only as public input. He also pledged to continue monitoring the progress of the recommendations produced during the discussion.

As part of the follow-up process, Suhaimi said he would bring the residents’ recommendations to higher levels of government for further coordination. Discussions will involve the East Jakarta Mayor’s Office, the East Jakarta Water Resources Sub-agency, and the Jakarta Water Resources Agency to ensure flood mitigation efforts in Klender receive broader institutional support. He stressed that cooperation among multiple agencies would be essential to delivering effective and lasting flood management solutions. The initiative aims to accelerate the government’s response to long-standing drainage and flooding issues affecting local communities.

Meanwhile, Head of the Duren Sawit Water Resources Unit, A Dody F, confirmed that his office would conduct detailed technical assessments based on the outcomes of the meeting. The agency plans to inspect and map flood-prone locations to determine the factors contributing to recurring inundation. The findings will then be matched with existing authorities and development programs to identify the most appropriate interventions. Officials hope the technical evaluation will provide a stronger foundation for more effective and sustainable flood management measures in Klender Urban Village.
