Cideng Barat and Timur Undergo Infrastructure Upgrade with Overhead Cable Rearrangement

The Jakarta Public Works Agency (Dinas Bina Marga), together with the Indonesian Telecommunications Network Providers Association (APJATEL) and telecommunications operators, has begun reorganizing 4.8 kilometers of overhead fiber optic cables along Jalan Cideng Barat and Jalan Cideng Timur in Central Jakarta. The project involves relocating the cables into the city’s underground Integrated Utility Network System (SJUT) to improve safety and urban aesthetics.

Head of the Jakarta Public Works Agency, Heru Suwondo, said the relocation is part of the city’s broader effort to create a safer, more orderly, and visually cleaner urban environment. He added that the initiative is being carried out across all five municipalities in Jakarta in accordance with Regional Regulation No. 8 of 2025 on the placement of utility networks. The agency has also urged telecommunications operators to inventory and reorganize their fiber optic infrastructure.

According to Imam Adi Nugraha, Head of the Utility Infrastructure Division, 67 overhead fiber optic cables remain along the two roads, most of which are no longer in use and will be removed. He noted that 18 telecommunications operators have already transferred their utility networks underground on both road sections.

APJATEL Greater Jakarta Coordinator Anton F. Belnis said the relocation of the 4.8-kilometer cable network is expected to be completed within the next two weeks. In addition to moving the cables underground, around 800 fiber optic poles will also be dismantled. APJATEL has also requested assistance from the state electricity company PLN to address sagging power lines in the area.
