The large pile of garbage at the waste collection site (TPS) of Waduk Pluit Public Housing in North Jakarta has been completely cleared after an intensive cleanup operation. According to North Jakarta Environment Agency Head Edy Mulyanto, the waste, which had accumulated to nearly two meters high, was removed in less than 10 working days through daily operations conducted between July 14 and 23. The cleanup involved one heavy machine and two to three large garbage trucks each day, completing a total of 21 waste transport trips.
To prevent future waste buildup, the agency has provided 12 large waste bins at the site and plans to introduce a small electric compactor to improve daily waste management. Edy also reminded housing managers that, under Jakarta regulations, public housing complexes are responsible for managing their own waste, similar to hotels, restaurants, cafés, and apartment buildings. He emphasized that proper waste management requires cooperation from the Public Housing Management Unit (UPRS) and residents alike.
Edy added that waste should be viewed as a shared responsibility rather than solely the government’s task. He noted that when sorted and processed correctly, waste can generate economic value and provide additional income for households. Better waste segregation at the source, he said, is essential to maintaining a cleaner environment and preventing similar problems in the future.
Meanwhile, North Jakarta Assistant for Economic and Development Affairs Wawan Budi Rohman praised the Environment Agency’s swift response and announced plans to hold waste management awareness programs for public housing managers across the city’s six districts. The city administration also urged residents to actively separate their household waste, pointing to the successful independent waste management system already implemented at Rorotan Public Housing. Officials hope the clean condition of the site can be maintained through continued cooperation between residents, housing managers, and local authorities.
