The 2026 Proclamation Historical Walk, held to commemorate the 81st anniversary of Indonesian Independence, took place at the Joang 45 Museum and Proclamation Monument in Central Jakarta on Sunday, August 16. Under the theme Reflections on Independence for Today and Tomorrow, the event served as both a historical education program and an opportunity for younger generations to remember the nation’s struggle for independence. The walk began at the Joang 45 Museum and ended at the Proclamation Monument, visiting several locations connected to the historic moments surrounding Indonesia’s declaration of independence. Representative of Indonesia’s first Vice President Mohammad Hatta’s family, Halida Nuriah Hatta, praised participants for maintaining their enthusiasm and commitment to remembering the nation’s history.
Halida said the Hatta family was honored to once again be invited to the annual event, with her siblings Meutia Farida Hatta Swasono and Gemala Rabi’ah Hatta also sending their greetings. She highlighted the optimism and positive atmosphere among participants, saying it was important for society to consistently preserve the memories and experiences of the nation’s struggle. Halida also emphasized that Indonesia’s independence was achieved through the efforts of the Indonesian people themselves. She rejected claims that independence was simply a gift from Japan, stressing the importance of recognizing the efforts made by Indonesians to achieve national independence.
As Indonesia enters its 81st year of independence, Halida encouraged the public to reflect on how far the country has progressed. She said national development requires trustworthiness, consistency, progress, and diligence in carrying out responsibilities. She also pointed to the ideals contained in the Preamble and the 1945 Constitution, including Indonesia’s commitment to world peace and improving the nation’s intellectual and social quality. According to Halida, a good quality of life requires more than academic intelligence, as individuals and society must also develop the ability to live responsibly and meaningfully.
Halida stressed that achieving these ideals requires cooperation and cannot be accomplished individually. She expressed optimism that people continue to remember the importance of national unity despite their busy daily lives. She urged Indonesians to fill independence by preserving unity, sovereignty, justice, and prosperity. For Halida, sovereignty means that Indonesia is able to determine its own future while maintaining a strong foundation in facing national and global challenges.
