Applications are open for the Spring and Fall 2027 Young Southeast Asian Leaders Initiative Academic Fellows Program (YSEALI AFP) until October 12, 2026. Sponsored by the U.S. Department of State and administered by the Maureen and Mike Mansfield Center at the University of Montana, the program brings young Southeast Asian leaders aged 18 to 25 to the United States. Fellows take part in an approximately five-week academic exchange focused on Economic Prosperity, Liberty and Freedom, Natural Resources, or Peace and Security. The fully funded program combines academic study at a U.S. college or university with an academic field experience.
YSEALI AFP is designed to develop young leaders with an interest in shared economic prosperity and security between the United States and the Indo-Pacific region. Participants explore American expertise in fields connected to the program’s four themes through intensive academic activities. The program also provides opportunities for fellows to build professional and cross-cultural connections with other young leaders. These experiences are intended to help participants develop ideas and apply them in their communities and countries.
U.S. Embassy Spokesperson Jamie Ravetz said YSEALI reflects the U.S. government’s continuing effort to build connections with Southeast Asia’s next generation of leaders. According to Ravetz, the Academic Fellows Program provides young people with knowledge, networks, and experience that can help turn ideas into practical initiatives. Since its launch, the initiative has supported more than 2,700 alumni across Southeast Asia. Alumni have gone on to work in areas including government, business, civil society, and education.
The program covers major expenses associated with participation, including U.S. visas, international airfare, living costs, tuition, insurance, and other academic activity-related expenses. This funding allows selected fellows to participate in the exchange without bearing the program’s primary costs themselves. Applications for the 2027 Spring and Fall cohorts remain open through October 12, 2026. The initiative continues to provide a structured academic and professional exchange for young Southeast Asian leaders seeking experience in the United States.
