The Jakarta Food Security, Maritime and Agriculture Agency (KPKP) plans to develop the Cengkareng Fishery Product Promotion area in West Cengkareng, West Jakarta, into a tourism destination. To support the plan, the agency intends to revitalize the Cengkareng TPHP building and surrounding area with the involvement of investors or other third parties. Jakarta KPKP Head Hasudungan Sidabalok said 39 ornamental fish businesses are currently active at the site. However, the area has become less crowded as more consumers now purchase ornamental fish through online platforms.
The agency has coordinated with the West Jakarta Tourism and Creative Economy Sub-agency and the West Jakarta City Government to explore ways of developing the area’s economic and tourism potential. As an initial measure, West Jakarta KPKP officials will organize activities at the site, including sterilization programs and Safari Gemar Ikan, an initiative promoting fish consumption. These activities are expected to introduce the Cengkareng TPHP to a wider audience and encourage greater public interest. The government sees increased activity as one way to support the site’s gradual revitalization.
KPKP also plans to conduct an inventory and assessment of the existing building to determine its current condition. The Cengkareng TPHP building was constructed around 2010 and occupied in 2011, but has reportedly received little to no maintenance since then. The agency hopes investors will become interested in collaborating to promote, renovate, and develop the area as the planning process moves forward. The proposed investment scheme is still at an early stage, with the government continuing to explore possible forms of cooperation.
Chairman of the Cengkareng Ornamental Fish Traders Association (APIC), Brian Gautama, said the building’s condition has deteriorated after years without proper maintenance. Several areas, including parts of the roof, canteen, and prayer room, have reportedly suffered damage. Brian urged the relevant authorities to pay greater attention to the building’s suitability, facilities, and infrastructure so the site can be accessed comfortably by the public. Improving these basic conditions will be an important part of efforts to turn the fishery promotion area into a more active economic and tourism destination.
