East Jakarta Mayor Munjirin led a mud-clearing operation along the Sunter River in Cipinang Melayu, Makasar, as a preventive measure against flooding and waterlogging. The operation targeted an area where mud sediment and accumulated waste had significantly reduced the river’s capacity. Munjirin said the dredging is expected to increase the river’s capacity to carry larger volumes of water. The sediment at the site is estimated to be between 1.5 and 2 meters thick, requiring an extended period of work.
Munjirin explained that the dry season is being used to intensify the cleaning of waterways throughout East Jakarta. The work covers micro and macro drainage channels, connecting channels, and larger rivers. He said sediment removal is routinely carried out every Tuesday, Friday, and Sunday across various parts of East Jakarta. The approach is intended to improve drainage capacity before heavier rainfall increases the risk of waterlogging.
East Jakarta City Secretary Eka Darmawan said around 200 personnel were involved in the Sunter River operation. The joint team included PPSU workers, Water Resources Task Force personnel, Public Works, Parks and Urban Forests, the Water Agency’s Air Body Management Unit, Environmental Agency staff, Civil Service Police officers, and local residents. The city administration also encouraged residents to help maintain the cleanliness of waterways after they have been cleared. Local participation is considered important to prevent waste from accumulating again in cleaned drainage channels.
Makasar Subdistrict Water Resources Unit Head Nurdin said four pieces of heavy equipment were deployed, consisting of two amphibious machines and two mini excavators. Four dump trucks were also assigned to transport the dredged material, with the sediment being removed from an area measuring approximately 200 by 10 meters. The project is expected to take around three months to complete, with dredging reaching roughly 1.5 meters in depth. Meanwhile, RW 09 Chairman Sunarjo welcomed the operation and noted that the area has not experienced recurring flooding since 2013.
