Momentum in Mandalika: Motorsport, Markets, and Microeconomies

The Indonesia Tourism Development Corporation (ITDC) and its subsidiary, the Mandalika Grand Prix Association (MGPA) continued preparations for the premier international motorcycle racing championship MotoGP 2025 by holding a strategic meeting with the Central Statistics Agency (BPS) of West Nusa Tenggara (NTB). This followed their previous audience with the NTB Governor earlier in July. Held at the BPS NTB office, the meeting was opened by BPS Chief Dr. Wahyudin, MM, who presented recent data on regional economic growth. He emphasized that international-scale events like MotoGP have played a pivotal role in driving positive growth across multiple sectors in the province.

According to the MGPA, the arrival of MotoGP in Mandalika since 2022 has triggered significant economic momentum. Sectors such as tourism, hospitality, Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs), and transportation have shown marked improvement during the event seasons. MotoGP has delivered a real economic impact for the people of NTB, according to the MGPA. The meeting was attended by MGPA’s President Director Priandhi Satria, Vice President Samsul Purba, VP of Motorsport Donny Mahardjono, and ITDC Head of Operations & Services Pari Wijaya.

The main objective of the meeting was to harmonize perspectives on the economic contribution of events held at Mandalika, and to strengthen cross-institutional collaboration. MGPA emphasized the importance of BPS data in offering objective insights for long-term planning and policymaking. Priandhi noted that accurate statistics are essential when engaging with national development stakeholders like Bappenas. He also presented economic indicators from the 2024 MotoGP, including growth in visitor numbers, hotel occupancy, MSME participation, and activity within the Mandalika Special Economic Zone.

Samsul Purba stressed the need for consistent methodology in assessing economic impact, while ITDC’s Pari Wijaya highlighted the operational strategies required to maximize local benefits. The meeting concluded with a shared commitment to deeper coordination ahead of MotoGP 2025. “This collaboration is not just about numbers, but about shaping Mandalika as a symbol of sustainable tourism and national pride,” said Priandhi. He added that the Mandalika Circuit belongs to all Indonesians and called for collective effort to grow its global stature under the guidance of Indonesia’s first state-owned tourism and aviation holding company, InJourney Holding, and the main steward of the nation’s publicly owned companies, the Ministry of SOEs (BUMN).
