The Australian Embassy has opened applications for the 2025 Elizabeth O’Neill Journalism Award, honoring the distinguished career of Elizabeth O’Neill OAM, who tragically passed away in Indonesia on March 7, 2007, while serving with Australia’s Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT). The award celebrates her tireless dedication to fostering deeper understanding between Australia and Indonesia through accurate and insightful media reporting. By recognizing her legacy, the program highlights the essential role journalism plays in strengthening bilateral ties.
Each year, the Elizabeth O’Neill Journalism Award is granted to one journalist from Indonesia and one from Australia. The recognition is open to outstanding professionals working across print, radio, television, and online media, regardless of career stage. The program emphasizes inclusivity by ensuring opportunities for both seasoned and emerging reporters. This framework seeks to encourage diverse voices and perspectives in shaping cross-cultural dialogue.
The selected recipient from Indonesia will be sponsored for a two-week visit to Australia, fully funded by the program. During this time, the journalist will engage in tailored experiences designed to broaden their understanding of current issues affecting both nations. Topics may include foreign policy, trade, development assistance, people-to-people relations, and education. Such exposure aims to cultivate practical insights that can enrich media reporting at home.
Applicants must be Indonesian citizens residing in Indonesia to be eligible. Comprehensive details regarding the registration process are available through the official Elizabeth O’Neill Journalism Award 2025 link. The application deadline is set for Thursday, October 30, 2025, at 2:00 p.m. Western Indonesia Time. With this initiative, the embassy underscores its commitment to nurturing informed journalism as a pillar of international cooperation and mutual respect.
