Super Garuda Shield 2025: U.S. Chargé d’Affaires Underscores Strong U.S.–Indonesia Ties in Baturaja

Chargé d’affaires, ad interim of the U.S. Embassy in Jakarta, Ambassador Peter M. Haymond, visited Baturaja, South Sumatra, to witness the final phase of Super Garuda Shield 2025, one of Southeast Asia’s largest multinational military exercises. His presence reaffirmed the U.S. commitment to regional security, partnerships, and local development. The highlight of the visit was the Combined Joint Land Fire demonstration, showcasing months of coordination between the Indonesian Armed Forces and partner nations. The exercise integrated fighter jets, attack helicopters, and rocket systems, underscoring interoperability in safeguarding a free and secure Indo-Pacific.

In his remarks, Haymond emphasized unity among participating nations, stressing that collective action is essential to protect sovereignty and prosperity in the region. He praised the exercise as a testament to shared determination in addressing security challenges while contributing to humanitarian efforts. The joint drills not only strengthened military cooperation but also conveyed political reassurance of long-standing alliances. According to Haymond, such initiatives show how defense collaboration aligns with broader goals of peace and stability.

Beyond the battlefield, the visit highlighted humanitarian impact through the ribbon-cutting ceremony at SDN 02 Tunas Peracak in Oki Timur. The renovation project was funded by the U.S. Department of Defense’s humanitarian aid program and completed with the support of Canadian personnel under the Engineers’ Civil Action Program. The Deputy Commander of Indonesia’s Education, Training, and Doctrine Command (KODIKLAT), Air Vice Marshal Bambang Gunarto, joined alongside Canadian Ambassador Jess Dutton and local leaders. The school initiative symbolized investment in youth and future generations, providing safe and modern learning spaces.

With 13 nations participating, Super Garuda Shield 2025 has evolved into one of Asia’s most significant multinational defense collaborations. It combines military readiness with community-building efforts, strengthening trust among allies and fostering long-term resilience. The exercise was lauded not only as a symbol of collective defense but also as a bridge for international goodwill. Ultimately, the events in Baturaja reflected a strategic balance: reinforcing military preparedness while deepening humanitarian engagement across the Indo-Pacific.
