A total of 300 martial artists from 40 traditional Betawi silat schools showcased their skills at the “Maen Pukul Betawi 2025” championship, hosted at the Betawi Cultural Village Management Unit (UPK PBB) in Setu Babakan, Jagakarsa, South Jakarta. The event served not only as a martial arts competition but also as a celebration of Betawi heritage. Local leaders emphasized its importance in preserving cultural values. The championship became a platform to instill pride, discipline, and solidarity among young generations.
Head of UPK PBB Setu Babakan, Toni Bako, stressed that the championship went beyond physical movements. He described Betawi silat as a reflection of community philosophy rooted in resilience, honor, and brotherhood. According to him, such values need to be taught early to ensure cultural continuity. He noted that silat plays a vital role in uniting Betawi communities while reinforcing identity.
Chairperson of the organizing committee, Farah Aini, highlighted that this was the first silat championship held by UPK PBB Setu Babakan. The main goal, she said, was to introduce Betawi silat to wider audiences, especially young people. The tournament featured categories focused on choreography, synchronization, and richness of movement. More than 300 participants, ranging from children to teenagers, competed enthusiastically.
Winners of the competition were awarded trophies, certificates, and development funds. Farah expressed her hope that this inaugural event would grow into a regular cultural agenda. She underscored the importance of silat schools as guardians and promoters of Betawi traditions. Organizers envision that young participants will pass down their knowledge, ensuring Betawi martial arts remain alive for generations to come.
