North Jakarta Sends 10 Troupes to Compete in Jakarta Theater Festival

The Department of Culture of North Jakarta has launched the North Jakarta Theater Festival at the Aki Tirem Cultural Arts Training Center in Kebon Bawang, Tanjung Priok. Running from September 24 to 28, 2025, the event brings together 10 theater groups eager to showcase their craft. The gathering is designed not just as a competition, but as a platform for artists to demonstrate creativity, discipline, and cultural dedication. It reflects the city’s effort to sustain artistic vibrancy at the local level.

Assistant for Administration and People’s Welfare of the North Jakarta City Secretary, Muhammad Andri, expressed his gratitude to the organizing body and praised the high standard of performances. He emphasized that the festival provides an opportunity for artists to elevate their work beyond the city, aspiring to provincial and even national recognition. His remarks underscored the importance of nurturing innovative and creative approaches within the performing arts. The recognition also reflects a broader commitment to public support for culture.

Acting Head of Development at the North Jakarta Department of Culture, Puji Saktiyana, explained that the annual festival aims to build a stronger ecosystem for theater. By offering a space to experiment and compete, the event encourages performers to refine their skills while preserving cultural traditions. The lineup features 10 groups, including Teater Bambie, Teater Cahaya, Teater diRI, Insani Teater Cilincing, and Teater Trotoar, each presenting plays of their own choice. From these, three winners will be selected to represent North Jakarta at the provincial level.

Beyond group recognition, the festival also honors individual achievements in directing, acting, stage design, music, costume, and production. Awards include trophies, certificates, and financial support for further development. The excitement resonates among participants such as Aceng Gimbal of Teater Trotoar, who performed “Titik Nol” after two months of preparation. His enthusiasm captures the spirit of the festival: a belief that theater in North Jakarta can grow in popularity, sustain its artistic identity, and inspire future audiences.
