The 17th National Student Sports Week (POPNAS) and the 11th National Student Paralympic Week (PEPARPENAS) officially opened at the Jakarta International Velodrome in Rawamangun, East Jakarta, on Sunday (Nov. 2). The ceremony was inaugurated by Deputy Minister of Youth and Sports, Taufik Hidayat, and attended by government officials, athletes, coaches, and delegations from across Indonesia. Hidayat highlighted that the event coincides with the commemoration of Youth Pledge Day, a moment symbolizing unity, perseverance, and empathy. He emphasized that these same values live on through the student-athletes competing with integrity and camaraderie.
The Deputy Minister stated that young athletes represent the future champions who will elevate Indonesia’s name at the national and international levels. He encouraged all participants to compete with determination, uphold sportsmanship, and embody empathy in every match. Addressing the para-athletes at PEPARPENAS, he expressed deep respect for their resilience and spirit, calling them an inspiration to the entire nation. His remarks underscored the inclusive spirit of the event, which celebrates excellence across all abilities.
Governor of Jakarta, Pramono Anung, welcomed all athletes to the capital, calling them the finest representatives of their respective regions. He said Jakarta was honored to host the two prestigious events and had quickly prepared facilities to ensure successful execution as part of its commitment to advancing youth and sports. Pramono pledged to achieve “three successes” — in organization, administration, and athletic achievement. He also invited athletes to enjoy Jakarta’s iconic landmarks for free, including a visit to the top of the National Monument (Monas) to view the city’s skyline.
The Governor assured that all competitions would proceed smoothly, safely, and orderly, offering valuable experiences that promote character-building, unity, and fair play among students. He expressed confidence that the events would produce athletes capable of achieving international success, strengthening Indonesia’s global presence in sports. He also highlighted the collaboration between central and regional governments, the private sector, and sports communities as the foundation of the events’ success. Pramono concluded by urging the athletes to compete passionately and exemplify brotherhood, stating, “Be champions in every opportunity—compete for the nation, from Jakarta for Indonesia.”
