Several support pillars of the Bekasi-Cawang-Kampung Melayu (Becakayu) toll underpass on Jalan Laksamana Malahayati, Duren Sawit, East Jakarta, are being beautified with murals. The project is carried out by four officers from the Public Facilities and Infrastructure Handling Unit (PPSU). Lurah Duren Sawit, Santi Nur Rifiandini, explained that the murals aim to enhance the area’s aesthetics, as the current pillars appear dull and unappealing. The murals feature a variety of designs, including abstract motifs, Ondel-ondel figures, Betawi traditional houses, and other cultural elements.
Santi noted that the mural work began three weeks ago, and so far, ten pillars have been completed. There are a total of 56 pillars at the site, with the project expected to finish by December. She expressed hope that private companies could support the initiative through corporate social responsibility (CSR) programs to help fund the murals. The effort reflects a broader initiative to maintain urban beauty and create a more visually engaging environment for the community.
The murals are intended not only to beautify the area but also to highlight Betawi culture and local traditions. By integrating artistic elements into infrastructure, authorities aim to make the cityscape more inviting and culturally vibrant. PPSU officers have been carefully designing and executing the murals to ensure consistency and quality across all pillars. This project represents a creative approach to urban renewal that combines public art with community engagement.
Officials emphasized that such initiatives are part of ongoing efforts to improve public spaces and foster civic pride. The visual transformation of the Becakayu underpass is expected to encourage more residents and visitors to appreciate local culture while enjoying a more attractive city environment. Authorities also hope that the murals will inspire further collaborations between the government and private sector to enhance other public spaces. In the long term, the project aims to set a standard for integrating art and infrastructure throughout Jakarta.
