“Yellow Troops” Repair 5,355 Street Lights in North Jakarta

The Yellow Troops of the North Jakarta Public Works Sub-Department (Suku Dinas Bina Marga) have repaired 5,355 non-functioning streetlights across six subdistricts from January to October 2025. The Head of Infrastructure and Public Utilities for the Sub-Department, Untung Pitoyo, explained that these repairs were carried out in response to various complaint channels, including reports from residents, the JAKI app, social media reports, council member inquiries, leadership requests, and field monitoring by officers. He noted that outages are usually caused by component failures, wiring issues, missing cables, or electrical panel malfunctions.

Monthly repair numbers show that 586 lights were fixed in January, 628 in February, 563 in March, 510 in April, 513 in May, and 597 in June. In the second half of the year, 576 lights were repaired in July, 570 in August, 412 in September, and 400 in October. Untung emphasized that each reported outage is quickly addressed, with one four-person team usually deployed per location. These teams are equipped with a vehicle and supporting tools, including a seven-meter ladder for alleys and a larger truck-mounted ladder for main roads.

The teams operate 24 hours a day in three shifts, with the goal of restoring reported streetlights within 48 hours. Untung reminded the public that outages can occur at any time and encouraged residents to report any damaged or non-functioning lights promptly. He expressed appreciation for public reports, noting that the personnel are limited in number and their work ensures safety and comfort for the community. Residents, such as Tamara from Kelapa Gading, have expressed gratitude for the Yellow Troops’ efforts, highlighting that proper street lighting improves safety and mobility.

Tamara also noted that well-lit streets facilitate social and economic activities, making it easier for residents to move around safely at night. She described the lighting improvements in North Jakarta as highly beneficial, especially during nighttime hours. The repair and maintenance program demonstrates the Sub-Department’s commitment to public safety and the welfare of the community. By keeping streets illuminated and functional, the initiative contributes to both security and the quality of life for North Jakarta residents.
