The Head of Cempaka Putih Subdistrict, Camat Igan Muhammad Faisal, reported that fifteen elderly residents in the category of extreme poverty have recently received aid from the district. According to the official, most of these seniors have no employment and do not receive monthly pension funds. His team discovered their situations during routine social visits across three urban villages. The discovery highlights the severity of economic vulnerability among elderly residents in Jakarta.
The majority of the seniors were also found to be ill, further limiting their ability to sustain themselves. In response, the subdistrict provided basic necessities such as food packages, diapers, and health support equipment including wheelchairs and walking sticks. The authority stated that this assistance is meant to immediately reduce hardship while larger interventions are being prepared. He emphasized that improving quality of life for elderly residents is now a community priority.
Two of the identified seniors have already been transferred to a social care facility owned by the Jakarta Provincial Government for long-term care. The district leader explained that communication is being built with family members to encourage proper care rather than leaving elderly parents in unfit homes. He noted that social institutions offer better medical attention and a more secure living environment. According to him, this ensures dignity and safety for vulnerable elders.
Officials from the subdistrict work together with village administrators, puskesmas (community health centers), and members of the city council during these field visits. This collaboration helps assess residents’ needs more effectively and distribute assistance quickly. The district hopes that even basic support, whether food or medical equipment, can ease the seniors’ economic burden. The administration intends to continue regular monitoring to prevent further cases of extreme poverty among the elderly.
