How East Jakarta Fire and Rescue Department Works to Minimize Fire Risks

The East Jakarta Fire and Rescue Sub-Department has adopted multiple strategies to reduce fire incidents, ranging from the establishment of the Building Fire Safety Management (MKKG) program to extensive public education campaigns on fire prevention.

Head of the East Jakarta Fire and Rescue Sub-Department, Muchtar Zakaria, reported that three MKKG units have been formed in 2025 at Matraman Regional General Hospital, the National Agency of Drug and Food Control (BBPOM) in Jakarta, and the Kramat Jati District Office. The initiative focuses on ensuring that fire protection systems inside buildings function properly and that personnel are equipped to respond swiftly if emergencies occur. Authorities are emphasizing preventive safety measures to protect both property and human life.

Muchtar highlighted that forming an MKKG is mandatory for buildings with more than 500 occupants under Regional Regulation No. 8 of 2008 on Fire Prevention and Mitigation. Each MKKG team consists of 30 individuals representing office management, security units, and cleaning staff. Their presence is intended to strengthen internal readiness rather than relying solely on external emergency services. This approach reflects a broader shift toward proactive preparedness in high-density buildings.

Head of the Prevention Division of the East Jakarta Fire and Rescue Sub-Department, Edi Parwoko, explained that his office has also carried out fire prevention outreach programs in 33 neighborhood units (RW) in 2025, including Kayumanis RW 04, Pulogebang RW 08, and Kramat Jati RW 02. These workshops combine theoretical training with hands-on demonstrations to ensure the public understands how to prevent and respond to fire hazards. Edi also supervised the creation and training of Firefighting Volunteers (Redkar) in 15 administrative villages, followed by a Redkar competition to assess operational skills. The contest is seen as a way to keep volunteers motivated and ready for real incidents.

The agency has expanded its public engagement with a total of 522 fire prevention activities conducted without using the Jakarta provincial budget. These activities include meetings between Kelurahan Gulkarmat Task Forces and Jumantik health cadres, as well as sticker-labeling programs and door-to-door campaigns. The extensive scale of intervention reflects the agency’s commitment to building a community culture of prevention rather than relying solely on emergency responses. Authorities hope this multipronged strategy will significantly reduce fire cases in East Jakarta over the long term.
