Central Jakarta City Administration Socializes Waste Management in ProKlim Neighborhoods

The Central Jakarta City Administration, through the Environmental Sub-agency, held a public outreach session on waste management in a ProKlim neighborhood association on Thursday. The event was attended by Vice Mayor Eric PZ Lumbun, who framed the initiative as part of a broader climate mitigation effort. He emphasized that waste management is not merely about cleanliness, but a shared responsibility to preserve the environment. His remarks underscored the growing role of community-based programs in addressing urban environmental challenges.

Eric explained that the administration has been working to reduce the volume of waste sent to the Bantargebang landfill through a range of measures. These include establishing waste banks, promoting recycling and composting, developing biopore infiltration holes, cultivating maggots for organic waste processing, and reducing single-use plastics. He noted that such efforts are designed to shift waste management from end-of-pipe solutions to upstream community action. The approach reflects an editorially significant pivot toward local participation in climate resilience.

According to Eric, 100 neighborhood units in Central Jakarta have joined the Climate Village Program, known as the Climate Village Program (ProKlim). The program includes two ProKlim Lestari locations, 14 ProKlim Utama sites at the national level, 32 ProKlim Madya sites at the provincial level, and 52 ProKlim Pratama sites at the city level. These classifications indicate varying degrees of achievement in environmental management and climate adaptation efforts. The administration views the expansion of these sites as evidence of growing grassroots engagement.

Eric described the outreach session as a concrete demonstration of the government’s commitment to proper waste management. He stressed that waste management should not be seen solely as a government program, but as a collective movement involving residents. By strengthening awareness and shared responsibility, the city hopes to build long-term environmental stewardship. The initiative signals that climate action in urban areas increasingly depends on sustained collaboration between authorities and communities.
