The West Jakarta Parks and Urban Forest Sub-agency reported that it trimmed 991 trees between January and February 2026 to reduce the risk of falling trees during extreme weather. Head of the agency, Dirja Kusuma, said the pruning program was intensified as a preventive measure, particularly during periods of heavy rain accompanied by strong winds. The effort aims to maintain public safety and minimize potential hazards in residential areas and along major roads.
According to Dirja, the agency handled 541 trees in January alone. The work included light pruning on 211 trees, medium pruning on 226 trees, and heavy pruning on 79 trees. In addition, 17 trees were removed because their condition posed a risk to surrounding areas. The maintenance targeted various tree species commonly found along city streets and public spaces.
Among the trees pruned were Angsana, Acacia, Banyan, Mango, Asam Kranji, Water Guava, Ketapang, Glodokan, and Petai Cina. The agency prioritizes trees with dense branches or structural weaknesses that could potentially break or collapse during storms. Regular monitoring is also carried out to identify trees requiring immediate maintenance or removal.
In February, the agency handled another 450 trees, including 195 light prunings, 175 medium prunings, and 72 heavy prunings, while eight trees had to be cut down entirely. During the two-month period, authorities recorded 51 incidents of fallen or damaged trees. The continued maintenance program is expected to reduce such incidents and ensure safer urban green spaces across West Jakarta.
