The Central Jakarta city administration carried out an enforcement operation on Monday (March 9) to restore the function of public facilities in the area around Thamrin City and Plaza Indonesia in Kebon Kacang, Tanah Abang. The operation involved joint personnel from municipal agencies, including the public order agency, transportation office, public works units, as well as officers from the police and military. Authorities targeted illegal street vendors and unauthorized parking that had been occupying sidewalks and road shoulders in the busy commercial district.
Central Jakarta Mayor Arifin said the arrangement aimed to restore sidewalks and road shoulders that had been taken over by informal stalls and illegal parking. According to him, these activities often disrupted traffic flow and caused congestion in the surrounding area. The enforcement was therefore carried out to ensure that public infrastructure could function properly for pedestrians and motorists.
Arifin emphasized that the effort was not intended to eliminate people’s livelihoods but rather to restore the proper use of public facilities. He expressed hope that reorganizing the area would improve the overall environment and help make Central Jakarta a more attractive destination for visitors. Maintaining well-organized public spaces, he said, is important for supporting the city’s reputation and tourism potential.
The mayor also instructed neighborhood public facility maintenance workers to routinely clean the Kebon Kacang area so the shopping district remains tidy. In addition, authorities urged vendors not to return to selling on sidewalks or road shoulders and called on motorists to avoid illegal parking. The administration hopes greater public awareness will help maintain order and prevent the reoccupation of public spaces in the future.
