Thousands Flock to Art Museum in West Jakarta

The surge in museum visits during the Lebaran holiday period highlights the growing role of cultural spaces as both recreational and educational destinations in Jakarta. A total of 16,735 visitors were recorded across art museums in West Jakarta, particularly in the Kota Tua area and surrounding districts. This figure, compiled from three days before to seven days after Idulfitri 1447 Hijriah, reflects sustained public interest despite partial museum closures during the holiday. The trend underscores how festive periods can drive engagement with cultural institutions.

Head of the Art Museum Management Unit of Jakarta’s Cultural Agency, Sri Kusumawati, noted that visitor numbers began to rise significantly after the Eid celebrations. Sri explained that daily attendance increased steadily from H+1, with notable fluctuations before reaching a peak on H+7. The highest recorded turnout of 3,062 visitors on that day indicates a strong post-holiday rebound in tourism activity. Such patterns suggest that leisure visits are often delayed until after core holiday observances.

Despite a temporary dip באמצע the period, overall visitation remained robust, with consistent daily attendance across multiple museum sites. Sri Kusumawati highlighted that international visitors accounted for 339 of the total, indicating a modest but notable presence of foreign tourists. Among the museums, the Wayang Museum emerged as the most popular destination, drawing over 10,000 visitors. This preference reflects enduring public interest in traditional cultural heritage.

Looking ahead, Sri Kusumawati expressed optimism that the upward trend in museum visits will continue, particularly during school holidays. Sri emphasized that beyond recreation, museums serve an important educational function, especially for student visitors who form a large portion of the audience. She encouraged visitors to gain meaningful knowledge and share their experiences with others. Ultimately, the sustained interest in museums signals a positive outlook for cultural engagement in the city.
