Residents of Pondok Bambu Village in East Jakarta are being encouraged to adopt waste sorting practices directly at the household level as part of a broader environmental initiative. Duren Sawit Subdistrict Secretary, Dede Syaipullah, praised residents who have already implemented the program. He emphasized that community participation is crucial in reducing the volume of waste sent to the Bantar Gebang Integrated Waste Processing Site. The initiative reflects growing efforts to promote sustainable waste management at the local level.
Dede stated that reducing waste at the source requires active involvement from all elements of society. He expressed appreciation for residents who have participated and urged others to follow suit. According to him, continued socialization efforts will be carried out to expand awareness. Community leaders at the RW and RT levels are expected to play a key role in spreading this education further.
Pondok Bambu Village Head, Ateng Surahman, explained that outreach efforts are also aimed at strengthening the role of waste banks. He noted that increasing community participation will help minimize the amount of waste transported to Bantar Gebang. Several active waste banks already operate in the area, including those at the village office, multiple neighborhood units, a church, a school, and a hospital. These facilities serve as important hubs for managing recyclable waste and promoting environmental responsibility.
Meanwhile, Pondok Bambu LMK Deputy Chair, Heru Irianto Basuki, reaffirmed his support for the program. He stated that ideally every neighborhood unit should have its own waste bank to maximize impact. He also highlighted the need for stronger education and outreach efforts to ensure wider participation. In addition, he pointed out that solutions are needed to address land availability for waste bank operations, ensuring the program’s long-term sustainability.
