Mayor of Central Jakarta, Arifin, conducted a direct inspection of dredging activities along the Ciliwung River in the Matraman Dalam I area of Pegangsaan, Menteng. The operation focused on removing sediment buildup and accumulated waste that had clogged the waterway. This intervention was framed as a prompt response to long-standing concerns raised by local residents. The move underscores the administration’s attempt to balance public demand with practical flood mitigation measures.
In his remarks, Arifin explained that the dredging effort currently deploys a single unit of heavy equipment to clear the riverbed. He noted that the activity follows earlier community-led clean-up efforts involving joint personnel and residents. These prior initiatives included trash removal and vegetation cutting along the riverbanks. The continuation of such efforts signals a coordinated approach between authorities and the public.
Arifin further outlined that an amphibious excavator is being utilized to handle sediment extraction in the river. He indicated that additional heavy machinery, including amphibious units and long-arm excavators, would be deployed in the coming days. This expansion aims to accelerate the dredging process and improve overall efficiency. The technical approach reflects a growing emphasis on scaling up infrastructure responses to urban environmental challenges.
The mayor also detailed the method of sediment handling, where collected mud is first gathered along the riverbank to reduce water content before transport. He emphasized that this process minimizes spillage during removal, ensuring cleaner and more controlled operations. Arifin linked the dredging to a broader normalization project extending to downstream areas such as the West Flood Canal, aimed at improving water capacity and flow.
