70 Kayu Manis Residents Trained in Waste Sorting

The Jakarta East City Administration has stepped up efforts to promote environmental awareness by educating 70 residents of Kayu Manis Village on the importance of sorting waste at its source. Participants included PKK cadres, waste bank managers, and local community leaders such as RT/RW officials and LMK members. The initiative, held on Saturday (April 25), was part of a collaborative program with the Indonesian Waste Bank Association and Lions Club, packaged under the campaign “Safari 3 AH: Prevent, Sort, Process” in commemoration of Earth Day.

Assistant for Economy and Development of East Jakarta, Fauzi, emphasized that the program aims to build stronger public awareness and encourage wider adoption of waste bank initiatives in local communities. By promoting waste sorting at the household level, the government hopes to significantly reduce the volume of waste sent to the Bantar Gebang Integrated Waste Processing Site in Bekasi. He noted that community participation is essential to ensuring the long-term success of sustainable waste management programs.

During the event, residents were also introduced to the 3R waste management principle—Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle—as a practical framework for handling household waste. This educational component was designed to provide participants with actionable knowledge that can be applied in their daily lives. The program reflects a broader push by local authorities to shift waste management practices from reactive disposal to proactive reduction and reuse.

In addition to the educational sessions, the event featured creative and interactive activities, including an environmental-themed poetry competition, games, and several hands-on workshops such as eco enzyme and biowash production, eco-brick making, and composting techniques. Free health services like blood sugar checks and reading glasses distribution were also provided. According to local official Indah Susanti, the initiative not only raised awareness but also equipped residents with practical skills, reinforcing community engagement in building a more sustainable environment.
