The Government of Jakarta Barat held a simultaneous community clean-up operation across 56 urban villages on Sunday, May 17, 2026. In addition to cleaning drainage systems and neighborhood areas, the program also focused on waste management and household-level waste sorting. Mayor Iin Mutmainah said the activity is part of a routine weekend agenda carried out by local government officials to improve environmental cleanliness and reduce flood risks during the rainy season. The initiative also serves as a public campaign encouraging residents to reduce waste through sorting practices directly from their homes.
During the visit, Iin toured several pilot neighborhoods that have already implemented household waste separation programs. One of the highlighted areas was RW 07 in Joglo, which has reportedly practiced waste sorting since 2019. At the site, she inspected a waste bank and a “green house” facility where organic waste is processed into compost, eco enzymes, and maggot cultivation products. The mayor also reviewed urban farming activities in the area, which are considered part of the broader environmental sustainability movement promoted by the city administration.
The inspection continued at a community clean-up operation involving drainage cleaning and mud removal along Jalan Meruya Selatan in RW 07, Meruya Selatan. Iin later visited a TPS 3R waste processing facility in RW 01 of Meruya Selatan, where waste is converted into compost raw materials while residual waste is transported to TPST Bantar Gebang. According to the city administration, the waste management models implemented in Joglo and Meruya Selatan are expected to become examples for other neighborhoods throughout West Jakarta. As a follow-up measure, each urban village is planned to designate one pilot neighborhood dedicated to household waste sorting initiatives.
Iin emphasized that the local government will continue promoting a zero-waste approach to minimize the amount of garbage sent to Bantar Gebang. She stated that only residual waste that cannot be processed should ultimately be transported to the final disposal site. To strengthen the movement internally, the mayor has also instructed civil servants within the West Jakarta administration to conduct office clean-up activities every Friday at least twice a month. Through these efforts, the city government hopes to demonstrate that environmental responsibility must begin within government institutions before being expanded to the wider community.
