Jakarta Dredges Connecting Channel at Cincin Reservoir

The Water Resources Sub-agency of Tanjung Priok, Jakarta Utara, has begun dredging the connecting canal of Waduk Cincin located beside Jakarta International Stadium on Jalan Danau Bisma in Papanggo. The dredging project was initiated as part of a city-level directive to normalize and clean several waterways across North Jakarta. Head of the Tanjung Priok Water Resources Unit, Neti Heriati, said the effort aims to reduce heavy sediment buildup and improve the canal’s water capacity so that water can flow more efficiently. Authorities hope the project will help minimize flooding risks in surrounding neighborhoods during periods of heavy rainfall.

According to Neti, the dredging operation covers a canal stretch of approximately 525.62 meters with a width of six meters and a depth of around four meters. The accumulated mud and garbage sediment being removed are estimated to reach a thickness of about two meters. So far, around 154.5 cubic meters of mud have been transported from the site, while additional sediment along the canal banks is still being calculated. Each day, two to three trucks are deployed to carry away the dredged material as part of the ongoing cleanup operation.

The project officially began in late April 2026 and is expected to be completed within two to three months. At least five personnel have been assigned to the operation, supported by heavy equipment including one XL 23 excavator and one AM 24 mini amphibious excavator. The use of specialized machinery is considered essential due to the depth and condition of the canal, which has experienced significant sedimentation over time. The dredging effort is also part of broader flood mitigation measures regularly carried out by Jakarta’s water management authorities.

Neti expressed hope that the dredging of the Waduk Cincin connecting canal would optimize water flow and reduce the risk of inundation in nearby residential areas. Local resident Radiansyah from Sunter Agung welcomed the quick response from the Water Resources Agency, noting that the canal had suffered from severe shallowing for a long period. Residents hope that, beyond the current project, regular maintenance of drainage channels will continue in the future to keep the neighborhood free from flooding and standing water.
