Jakarta’s 499th Anniversary: Central Jakarta Citizens Voice Their Hopes

As Jakarta marks its 499th anniversary, residents of Central Jakarta have shared their hopes and suggestions for the city’s future. Many expressed optimism that, as it approaches its fifth century, Jakarta will continue to grow into a more advanced, safe, and comfortable city while delivering better public services and improving the welfare of its residents.

Ana Nur, a 37-year-old resident of Tanah Abang, said she is proud to be part of a city that aspires to become a global metropolis. She hopes Jakarta will continue to develop and become increasingly safe, modern, and livable for its citizens. Ana also called for improvements to public transportation services and more pedestrian-friendly sidewalks throughout the city.

Similar views were expressed by Rudi, a 50-year-old resident of Kemayoran and a regular Transjakarta passenger. While acknowledging that the bus service has improved, he urged authorities to increase the number of buses in operation to reduce long queues and overcrowding during peak commuting hours in the morning and evening.

Meanwhile, Amelia, a 35-year-old online motorcycle taxi driver from Kemayoran, asked the Jakarta administration to provide greater support for gig economy workers, including free parking facilities. She also urged the government to ensure that social assistance programs are distributed more accurately, noting that she previously received aid but no longer qualifies despite still needing support. Together, these aspirations reflect residents’ hopes for a more inclusive and responsive Jakarta as it approaches its 500th year.
