Alumni and Thought Leaders Convene for ASEAN-Australia Partnership

ASEAN and Australia commemorated the fifth anniversary of the ASEAN–Australia Comprehensive Strategic Partnership by holding the inaugural ASEAN–Australia Track 1.5 Dialogue and the 2026 Aus4ASEAN Alumni Dialogue in Jakarta. The events brought together government representatives, policy experts, civil society leaders, and alumni to discuss the future of regional cooperation. Indonesia’s former Foreign Minister and United Nations Secretary-General’s Special Envoy on Water, Retno Marsudi, delivered the keynote address at the Track 1.5 Dialogue. The meetings highlighted the importance of strengthening collaboration to address shared regional challenges.

The ASEAN–Australia Track 1.5 Dialogue served as a platform for exchanging ideas on the future direction of the partnership. Australia’s Ambassador to ASEAN, Tiffany McDonald, said the discussions were designed to generate practical ideas that would enhance cooperation across the region. She emphasized that the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership helps both sides shape the rules, norms, and relationships needed to strengthen regional resilience. Participants explored ways to deepen collaboration in response to evolving opportunities and challenges in the Indo-Pacific.

The 2026 Aus4ASEAN Alumni Dialogue gathered more than 75 alumni from ASEAN and Australia to discuss the implementation of the ASEAN Outlook on the Indo-Pacific. ASEAN Secretary-General Dr. Kao Kim Hourn delivered the keynote address, while participants shared perspectives on promoting regional cooperation through education and professional networks. Alumni also joined the Track 1.5 Dialogue to ensure that younger voices contributed to discussions about the future of the partnership. Indonesian alumna Elnaya Mahadevi Pillian said the program demonstrated the value of education, collaboration, and long-term relationships in building regional impact.

Together, the two dialogues underscored ASEAN and Australia’s commitment to strengthening their Comprehensive Strategic Partnership for the years ahead. Organizers emphasized that cooperation between governments, experts, and the next generation will be essential in addressing regional priorities and maintaining stability. The events also reinforced the role of education, dialogue, and people-to-people connections in supporting long-term collaboration. By fostering broader participation, ASEAN and Australia aim to build a more resilient and prosperous future for the Indo-Pacific region.
