Residents around Pasar Rumput and Manggarai can now enjoy Indonesian films without traveling far, following the opening of a mini cinema at Pasar Rumput Flats in Jakarta. The Jakarta Kota Sinema, or Jak Cinema, was officially inaugurated by Jakarta Deputy Governor Rano Karno on Monday, August 24. The cinema has one studio with a capacity of 43 people and is directly connected to the Jakmart Rusun Pasar Rumput retail area. Rano said the initiative supports Jakarta’s vision of becoming a city that provides more space for Indonesian cinema and the creative economy.
Rano said easier access to cinemas could strengthen the wider creative ecosystem, including music, design, crafts, photography, and digital technology. He noted that Indonesian films continued to attract strong public interest, with more than 40.7 million admissions recorded between January and July 2026. Of around 93 national films released during the period, Indonesian films reportedly accounted for 67 percent of the national box office audience. Rano said the figures demonstrated continued demand for local productions and that Jak Cinema would bring Indonesian films closer to residents at affordable prices.
Rano also expressed hope that Jak Cinema at Pasar Rumput would inspire young residents to pursue careers in the Indonesian film industry. He suggested that similar cinemas could eventually be established in public housing developments across Jakarta, providing residents with entertainment spaces while giving talented young people opportunities to develop their creativity. The initiative is expected to make cultural and creative activities more accessible to communities living in public housing. It also reflects the city administration’s broader effort to integrate entertainment and creative spaces into residential areas.
Perumda Pasar Jaya President Director Agus Himawan Widyanto said Jak Cinema would be developed in other markets through a partnership with Layar Digi. The Pasar Rumput cinema is located in Tower 3 and is directly connected to Jakmart, making it convenient for residents and visitors. Tickets are priced between Rp15,000 and Rp20,000, with the JXCine ticketing system using vending machines integrated with digital QRIS payments. Pasar Jaya hopes the cinema will diversify its business while transforming traditional market areas into modern, integrated spaces that better reflect the needs of Jakarta residents.
