Firefighters from the North Jakarta and Thousand Islands Fire and Rescue Sub-Department successfully extinguished a blaze that swept through a densely populated residential area on Jalan Dermaga Ujung, Pluit, Penjaringan. The North Jakarta and Thousand Islands Fire and Rescue Agency deployed 22 fire trucks and 132 personnel after receiving the report at around 6:50 p.m. on Thursday. The first crews arrived about one minute after the report, but the fire had already grown rapidly and was fueled by highly flammable building materials. The flames were contained at 8:29 p.m., followed by cooling operations before the fire was fully extinguished at 12:12 a.m.
The fire affected semi-permanent residential buildings across an area measuring approximately 60 by 40 meters. A total of 60 houses were destroyed, although no fatalities were reported. Two residents suffered injuries while attempting to escape and received medical treatment from Indonesian Red Cross ambulance personnel at the scene. Authorities said the cause of the fire remains unknown and is still under investigation.
Pluit Urban Village Head Achmad Faizal expressed appreciation to the firefighters and other personnel involved in the emergency response. Around 180 families, or approximately 720 people, were displaced by the fire and evacuated to safe locations, including nearby prayer halls and relatives’ homes. The urban village administration coordinated with the North Jakarta Social Sub-Department and Regional Disaster Management Agency (BPBD) to provide emergency assistance. Initial supplies were delivered and distributed directly to affected residents.
The North Jakarta BPBD also provided assistance to meet the basic needs of the fire survivors. The aid included 180 family kits, 70 children’s kits, 90 clothing packages, 300 blankets, 650 pillows, 650 folding mattresses, 80 boxes of bottled water, 120 cans of biscuits, and 650 boxes of ready-to-eat meals. Officials said the assistance was distributed through the local urban village administration. The emergency response is intended to help affected residents cope with the immediate impact of the disaster while further assistance is coordinated.
