The initiative is intended to encourage energy-saving habits while marking World Ozone Day, observed every September 16. Lights will be switched off at several major roads and landmarks across the capital, including the National Monument, Arjuna Wiwaha Statue, Selamat Datang Statue at the Hotel Indonesia Roundabout, and Jakarta City Hall. The campaign is designed to remind residents that environmental responsibility can begin with simple everyday actions.
Head of the Jakarta Environmental Agency, Dudi Gardesi, said the one-hour action encourages people to use electricity more responsibly. He emphasized that individuals can contribute from their homes, workplaces, and businesses by reducing unnecessary energy consumption. The Jakarta administration hopes that collective and consistent efforts will turn energy efficiency into a daily habit. The campaign therefore seeks participation not only from government agencies, but also from building managers, businesses, and the wider community.
A similar lights-out action held on June 13 for World Environment Day recorded 75.18 megawatt-hours of electricity savings. The effort was estimated to have reduced electricity costs by Rp108.69 million and cut emissions by about 60.14 tons of carbon dioxide equivalent, or CO₂e. The figures demonstrated that coordinated participation can produce measurable energy and environmental benefits. Jakarta officials are using the previous results as an indication of how community involvement can support broader sustainability efforts.
